    Frequently Asked Questions

    • A bamboo chasen has 100 fine, springy prongs carved from a single piece of bamboo. This design breaks up every clump of matcha powder and aerates the tea into a stable, silky foam — something a metal whisk, fork or even an electric frother cannot replicate. The bamboo also will not scratch a ceramic matcha bowl.

    • This chasen has 100 prongs (hyappundate), which is the standard for everyday ceremonial matcha preparation. Higher prong counts produce finer foam more quickly, making 100 prongs ideal for both beginners and experienced matcha drinkers.

    • With proper care, a bamboo chasen typically lasts 2–4 months of daily use. The prongs will naturally begin to curl inward and some may break over time — this is normal for a handmade bamboo tool. Using a whisk holder (kusenaoshi) to dry your chasen in its correct shape can double its lifespan.

    • Rinse the chasen under warm running water immediately after each use, gently swishing it to remove matcha residue. Do not use soap, put it in the dishwasher, or leave it sitting in water. Shake off excess water and place it on a whisk holder or upright on its handle to air-dry completely. Never store it in a closed drawer while still damp.

    • Yes. Before your first use, and ideally before each use, soak the tips of the prongs in warm water for 1–2 minutes. This softens the bamboo, makes the prongs more flexible, and reduces the risk of breakage during whisking.

    • An electric frother will dissolve the matcha, but it produces a different result — larger, less stable bubbles rather than the fine, creamy micro-foam a chasen creates. If speed and convenience are your priority, a frother works for lattes. For traditional matcha whisked with water, the chasen is the right tool.

    • Hold the chasen vertically and whisk briskly in a rapid W or M motion (not circular) using your wrist. Start slowly to break up clumps, then increase speed for 15–20 seconds until a fine layer of foam forms on the surface. For the full step-by-step method with water temperatures and ratios, see our how to make matcha guide.

    • Yes. Each chasen is hand-carved from a single piece of bamboo using traditional Japanese craftsmanship techniques. No two whisks are exactly alike. The bamboo is specifically selected for its density and flexibility to withstand repeated whisking.

    • A wide, shallow bowl (chawan) with an interior diameter of at least 10–12cm gives your whisk enough room for the W-motion. A regular coffee mug is too narrow and deep — the prongs cannot move freely, which means poor foam and uneven mixing. Browse our matcha bowls for bowls sized specifically for whisking.

    • The chasen works well for whisking any fine powder into liquid — collagen powder, hot chocolate, superfood blends. However, strongly flavoured or oily ingredients can stain the bamboo and transfer taste to your matcha. If you plan to use it for other powders, consider having a dedicated whisk for matcha.
